FAQs

Does Wildflower exclusively work with IBCLCs?

Yes. We only partner with IBCLCs. We support a woman’s right to breastfeed and we support the right of all IBCLCs to be a part of a healthcare system that provides quality lactation services.

In-network reimbursement vs out-of-network?

We work exclusively with our health plan partners and only bill for in-network services. This means no copays or balance billing. All members get at least 6 visits with an IBCLC covered 100% with no copays, no deductibles or out of pocket cost of any kind. We pay 30 days from the submission of a completed visit. You can be part of a group that offers you the ability to spread your support over six visits netting you $1000+ in income for providing your care to one Cigna member. Plus we may refer patients to you.

Which payers does Wildflower work with?

We are in-network as a nationally recognized provider with all Cigna commercial plans, most Cigna-affiliated third party administrators (known as TPAs) and many corporate clients that Cigna is affiliated with. Wildflower continues to grow with additional in-network health plan partners for lactation services.

What is the difference between an MSO and a third party biller?

As of 2025, we are Cigna's chosen MSO, Management Services Organization. Cigna has chosen us, a single point of contact, which streamlines the process. We manage their provider credentialing and contracts with IBCLCs, plus clinical performance, member eligibility, compliance, in addition to claims processing and payments. Wildflower also powers the Cigna Healthy Pregnancy mobile app, which is used by Cigna expecting moms. Wildflower works with Cigna and other national and local health plans on Women’s Health initiatives.

How do I know when a client is in-network?

We offer both real-time eligibility checks and a unique URL to ensure our tools fit within your workflow. You'll receive an immediate notification with a unique identifier when a client is deemed eligible. Coverage for lactation is per pregnancy/birth not by calendar year.

What are my administrative tasks?

We've simplified billing with our health plan partners which means shorter, less burdensome note-taking requirements so you can spend more time on care. Due to our billing arrangement, charting is not required for claims submission but you are required to keep your own notes available if requested by us or insurers at any time.

How can my patients schedule an appointment?

All of our IBCLCs get their own unique scheduling link. Plus, patients looking for lactation support who are Cigna members can schedule their appointment at wildflowerhealth.com/lactation. We offer something special to mothers blending virtual lactation care with consultants on the ground, working within the parameters of the current payers in our health system.

Support for accessible, high-quality and reliably-reimbursed lactation care
aligns with Wildflower’s values and mission

Leah Sparks
CEO & Founder, Wildflower Health

Our support for accessible, high-quality and reliably-reimbursed lactation care aligns with Wildflower’s values and mission, and each of you are an important part of that effort. For more than a year now, we’ve been working in the lactation market to enable improved access to IBCLC services. We are thrilled to now be working with IBCLCs in all 50 states and serving thousands of patients to ensure consistent, reliable coverage of lactation care.

However, we know that we still have a big hill to climb to expand access to more health plans that don’t currently include IBCLCs in their roster of credentialed, in-network providers. Both our health plan and provider partners have highlighted for us the gaps in lactation services. Recognizing that some networks were exploiting these gaps, health plans became aware of the problem and are now actively seeking various in-network solutions.

At Wildflower, we partner with many health plans to deliver software, services and value-based care programs. We are working to build on our existing partnerships with health plans to solve this problem for the IBCLC specialty by augmenting our existing technology and services to help drive faster, more consistent coverage of IBCLC services nationwide. This will take time, but we hope to partner with you as we identify new in-network contracts available in your region.

As you probably know by now, we have spent the last 12+ years on a journey to transform pregnancy and postpartum care to ensure health and safety for new parents and their babies.  That journey enabled us to build a robust platform of technology and services used by the country’s largest health plans and more than 600 OB providers for digital-enabled care management, value-based care, virtual care services, and remote patient monitoring. The journey also illuminated for us the crucial role that lactation consulting plays in delivering a whole health model of pregnancy and postpartum care, culminating in our creation of the network services we are now delivering alongside more than 1,400 IBCLC partners, like yourself.

We also believe that IBCLC services will be amplified and better accessed if OB providers have consistent workflows to refer to local IBCLCs during prenatal and postpartum care. To that end, we are testing workflows with our existing OB partners to build such referrals, and we hope to share more when this rolls out. We imagine a world where IBCLCs and OB providers—along with services such as behavioral health, mental health, and doula care—work together effortlessly. With a shared, comprehensive view of the patient, this collaboration would lead to quality care and improved health outcomes.

Wildflower has always been committed to access and quality for patients, and affordability for our healthcare system. Our approach to lactation care solutions hits on every one of these dimensions, and we are just getting started.
