FAQs
Does Wildflower exclusively work with IBCLCs?
Yes. We only partner with IBCLCs. We support a woman’s right to breastfeed and we support the right of all IBCLCs to be a part of a healthcare system that provides quality lactation services.
How does billing work?
We work exclusively with our health plan partners and only bill for in-network services. This means no copays or balance billing. All members get at least 6 visits with an IBCLC covered 100% with no copays, no deductibles or out of pocket cost of any kind.
What are Wildflower's reimbursement rates
We compensate our lactation consultants weekly with predetermined reimbursement rates for virtual and in-person (office and home visit.)
How do I know when a client is in-network?
We offer both real-time eligibility checks and a unique URL to ensure our tools fit within your workflow. You'll receive an immediate notification with a unique identifier when a client is deemed eligible.
Which payers does Wildflower work with?
We currently are in-network with Cigna. Cigna selected Wildflower to identify IBCLCs in key regions to enroll, manage and grow their network. Wildflower continues to grow with additional in-network health plan partners for lactation services.
What are my administrative tasks?
We've simplified billing with our health plan partners which means shorter, less burdensome note-taking requirements so you can spend more time on care.
How can my patients schedule an appointment?
Patients looking for lactation support who are Cigna members can schedule their appointment at wildflowerhealth.com/virtualcare. We offer something special to mothers blending virtual lactation care with consultants on the ground, working within the parameters of the current payers in our health system.

Support for accessible, high-quality and reliably-reimbursed lactation care
aligns with Wildflower’s values and mission
Leah Sparks
CEO & Founder, Wildflower Health
Our support for accessible, high-quality and reliably-reimbursed lactation care aligns with Wildflower’s values and mission, and each of you are an important part of that effort. I started Wildflower more than a decade ago with an aspiration to radically improve experience, quality and outcomes for pregnancy and newborn healthcare. By maintaining focus on that mission, we have been privileged to grow a technology and services business that provides digital interventions, care coordination, and lactation care network support to health plans covering more than 50 million Americans and to OB providers delivering more than 100,000 babies a year.
Over the past few years, both our health plan partners and our provider partners have highlighted for us the gaps in lactation services, which we know are critically important for expectant parents and breastfeeding families. Coverage of “breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding” is mandated under the Affordable Care Act. However, health plans have struggled to set up consistent in-network coverage of lactation care through IBCLCs due to a variety of factors. This resulted in IBCLCs being out-of-network with many health plans. This is a huge challenge for IBCLCs and their patients because out-of-network services are not a guarantee of coverage. In-network contracts are. We know that when lactation professionals are not in-network for the valuable services they provide, lactation consultants may not get reimbursed. At the same time, patients may face out-of-pocket payment or lose access altogether due to lack of affordability.
Some companies have taken advantage of this gap to bill out-of-network while promising coverage of services, leading to uneven access to care, reimbursement uncertainty for IBCLCs, and unsatisfied patients. Excessive out-of-network billing practices have also caused health plans to take notice of the in-network gaps for lactation care and seek solutions.
It is this market problem that Cigna is seeking to solve by working with Wildflower. Over the past year, Wildflower helped Cigna establish a high-quality, broadly accessible network of lactation consultants for both virtual and in-person services nationwide. Importantly, Cigna has enabled all its members, regardless of plan type, to be covered under this network with zero patient co-pays and reliable reimbursement for IBCLCs. We also listened to both patients and lactation consultants to put in place unique technology and support services. These steps make it easy to schedule virtual or in-person appointments, check eligibility, and track claims billing and payment.
Thanks to this partnership, in-network coverage of lactation care is now readily available for millions of members for one of the largest health plans in the country. Wildflower’s mission is simple – The Best Care. For All Women. Every Time. To deliver on that mission, we continue to focus on access, quality and affordability in women’s health. Our approach to lactation care solutions hits on every one of these dimensions, and we are just getting started.
